New Fiction

Sihastrul (The Hermit) began as a verse poem I composed in Romanian that can best be described as cycles of apocryphal tales spanning time and space. When I translated it into English, it transformed into a short story, which has since expanded into a novella.  Currently I am working on the final draft of the Romanian version.

The story is a complex pastiche of historical and religious concepts and events that unfold against larger themes of language and consciousness. The English version is complex; the Romanian translation, though difficult and ambitious to say the least, reveals nuances that are finding their way in Romanian.  As a work that has sojourned in two different languages, it is unique for the full circle it has made in its evolution. Little wonder, therefore, that language is one of the larger themes of the novella.
