ţărăncuţa was founded in 1985 by a group of young dancers and musicians.  under the artistic direction of doris plantus-runey, the group became the first non-profit romanian folk dance and music ensemble in michigan.  in an unprecedented move, ţărăncuţa opened her membership to all interested dancers and musicians, who previously affiliated only with individual romanian orthodox churches.  as a result, she became the fist group to include members from all area romanian orthodox churches in metropolitan detroit and windsor. this was significant in local romanian culture since the orthodox episcopate had been split for fifty years. after numerous exhibitions and participation in various festivals both locally and in canada, ţărăncuţa gave her first concert, which the romanian community from both sides of the divided episcopate attended. ţărăncuţa, thus, bridged an important cultural gap that had been fueled by church politics for five decades. after this successful concert, ţărăncuţa developed a rich membership of talented, dedicated performers, and represented the entire romanian community of metropolitan detroit at performances in detroit, windsor, montreal, kitchner, chicago, and st. louis. they have won various awards at different festivals, participated in cultural events at wayne state university, every one of the romanian churches in detroit and windsor, including the byzantine rite, and given concerts with reknowned romanian orchestra 'transilvania' .  in 1998 they performed at an exclusive reception for the ambassador of romania, and in 1999, they performed at a reception for former president of romania, constantinescu at the honorary romanian consulate in detroit. they have been invited to participate in  several  festivals in romania as a result of  their dynamic work as a romanian folk dance and music ensemble.  doris plantus-runey studied with the popular romanian choreographer mihai david, and also with eugenia popescu-judet of the celebrated romanian national folk ballet, ciocîrlia, and later, director of the tamburitzans of dusquesne university.

after a two year hiatus, ţărăncuţa is beginning its new season, and welcomes dancers and musicians of the detroit and windsor metropolitan area. for more information, send an email to tarancuta@bucovinamica.net.
